A flute was discovered in Europe that was carved from the bone of a bear. This flute is estimated to have been carved approximately 40,000 years ago!!! It fascinates me to think of a human-being taking time, energy, and resources to craft an instrument especially given the rigors of a hunter gatherer life style.
The reason I shared about this flute is that I want you to understand that sound, music, and instruments are fundamental to a healthy functioning society and have been for 10s of thousands of years. Every religion and indigenous group has utilized sound to support in prayer, meditation, ceremony, ritual, celebration, and healing. We are deeply impacted by sound and even to this day the average person uses music as a companion when they are happy, sad, celebrating, creating and so much more.
If you are anything like me, you may have had a bad experience with instruments and music as a kid. In 4th grade I wanted to play the saxophone, but was given the flute instead. Then there were piano lessons and choir. It was all so hard and frustrating at times and it was clear to me that I just wasn’t all that good at making music. What I discovered years later is that there are thousands of different kinds of instruments on this planet and for every complex piano or violin there are dozens of simple instruments that are accessible to EVERYONE.
In 2020 I partnered with the Ahimsa Yoga Studios to create the Ahimsa School of Sound Healing of which I am the director. Our mission is to empower people to express themselves and to support their own well-being through the playing of instruments. We specialize in instruments that anyone can play featuring quartz crystal singing bowls, Native American flutes, tongue drums, frame drums, and variety of rattles and shakers.
We have two retail locations located inside of the Ahimsa Oak Park yoga studio (441 South Blvd, Oak Park) and the Ahimsa Evanston yoga studio (614 Dempster St, Evanston).
